Canada continues to be one of the most LGBT friendly countries on the planet, offering equal rights for all of our citizens, including same-sex marriage. As of November 2006, over 12,000 same-sex couples have been married in Canada, a large percentage of which were visitors to our country. With no residency requirements, this makes it relatively easy for visitors to exchange vows while here on holiday or by planning ahead as a wedding destination of choice. The Canadian travel industry has been one of the strongest supporters of gay travel on many levels, and we now see a strong, diverse Canadian presence at many gay travel shows and events, at home and abroad. Canadian businesses and organizations have been consistently rolling out the rainbow welcome mat on the international stage, and this, along with extensive advertising campaigns in major print publications, is sending a clear message that we welcome the gay travel community with open arms. We have also seen a steady increase in intra-Canada travel in recent years, as more Canadians venture more frequently to visit friends and family cross country, attend events and celebrations in neighbouring communities, or simply head out to explore this vast and diverse land of ours. Recent features in many international LGBT magazines give Canada kudos for our progressive society, relative safety and live and let live attitude; fortunate we are, on many levels. To be able to travel openly and free, with common sense and respect for all, is a blessing.
